Jthejon food hunting begin (Asian Food Series)!!



First stop, Soup Restaurant. 



1991, the first outlet was established in Smith Street. Founders, Mok Yip Peng, Wong Wei Teck, Wong Chi Keong and Ho Hong Chin, observed a surge in the popularity of Herbal Soups in Hong Kong, with the emergence of restaurants specialising in Herbal Soups. 

In 1994, Mr Mok, drawing from his Cantonese upbringing in Chinatown, introduced a series of Cantonese based home-cooked dishes which we termed "Chinatown Heritage Cuisine". Culled from Mr Mok's family recipes and his Chinatown heritage, these dishes with their origins harking back to old Chinatown in the 1950s were designed to evoke a nostalgia for nutritious home-cooked food. The dishes were well-received, with "Samsui Ginger Chicken" becoming an instant hit and has since become one of their signature dishes.




The chicken soup was rich, smooth, flavorful and fragrant. All ingredients blend well in it. Pork meat was cooked till very soft and tender. 

 Samsui Ginger Chicken,

Chicken was tender and smooth. This's one of the best chicken in asia. The house ginger sauce was amazing good. Best match with the chicken. 

 Sweet and Sour Pork,

It was pretty bad as it was quite sweet and the pork was quite tough too. 
 Steamed San Yu,

Freshly cut san yu slice lightly steamed and topped with a special made sauce. A typical Chinatown family dish.
FIsh was soft and the wasn't that salty too, the sauce was quite tasty too.

 Claypot Tofu,

Tofu was soft and smooth. The sauce was sweet and salty. 

Ah Gong Fan Shu Ye,

The veggie was pretty good as it was spicy, fragrant, fresh and soft. The spiciness can be requested when ordering.

Variety of dishes is not much but the serving was fast.  Like how simple dishes can be made so good. They currently have 16 outlets in singapore, you guys should give it a try. 

Second Stop, Dian Xiao Er. 

Dian Xiao Er was founded in 2005, and it has stayed true to its niche, providing rustic, tastefully prepared Chinese comfort food in a homely setting. The main star at Dian Xiao Er are their roasted ducks, served in a variety of flavorful herbal broths. 

Decor at Dian Xiao Er is styled after a traditional Imperial Chinese rest inn, complete with dark wooden furniture and flooring, normally packed quite closely together



 Lotus Soup with Pork Ribs Soup,

The soup was rich, smooth and flavorful. It can the nature sweetness of the ingredients. Pork ribs was cooked to tender and soft still it melted once is in your mouth. 

 Duck Roasted with ten wonder herbs,

The duck meat is tender and moist. The duck skin retains a slightly crisp crunch, and a tinge of salty, savoury flavour. The gravy was strong with the flavor of Chinese herbs, and isn't overpowering. Ask for it to be deboned if you don't wish to dirty your hand. 

 Mongolian Spare Ribs,

The spare ribs was tender and succulent. It was coated with black pepper and plum sauce, and it make it more yummy. 

 Braised Tofu ,

The braised tofu was alright. The tofu was normal, the gravy was a little bit bland. 

Kailan with Salted Fish,

The veggie was fresh and well stir fried with salted fish. The salted fish blend well with it.

It wroth a try if you love chinese food or roasted duck. 
Dian Xiao Er currently had 9 outlets in Singapore. 

Third Stop, Putien. 

In year 2000, Putien opened it 1st outlet at Kitchener Road as a no frills “coffee shop style” eatery specialize in Heng Hwa cuisines. In year 2006, opened it 2nd outlet at VivoCity Food Republic and it was voted as Singapore’s Top 50 Restaurant by The Sunday Times. In year 2008, it embarked on a major rebranding exercise, and it opened 3rd outlet at Tampines Mall and 4th outlet at Marina Square. 

In year 2009, it opened 3 more outlets and it opened their first outlet in Cental Jakarta, they are the Winner of “Established Brand Award” in Singapore Prestige Brand Award and Winner of “Press Ad Single/Campaign – Chinese” in SPH Ink Award. Last year, 2014, it opended their 9th outlet at Raffles City and first foray into Hong Kong at Lee Theatre Plaza, Causeway Bay. 



 Lor Mee,

The "Heng Hua" style lor mee was pretty good. The broth was rich, creamy and flavorful. Noodle was chewy and smooth. The ingredients was fresh. And it different from our usual black lor mee.
 Heng Hua Fried Bee Hoon,

The famous "Heng Hua" fried bee hoon. The fried hoon was a bit plain but that was a lot of ingredients in it. The generous portion of ingredients was fresh and yummy. 

 Lychee Sweet and Sour Pork, 

It was pretty good as it was fresh, and the pork was tender and the lychee was well blend with it. The lychee taste never overwhelmed the dish too. It was a good dish. 

Steamed Live Soon Hock / Live Seabass,
Fresh fish steamed with garlic, black bean in soy sauce and chilli oil, then topped with a generous serving of chopped chillies for a savoury-spicy complement to the fish’s natural sweetness.

The food was pretty good, it worth a try. 
Putien Currently has 9 outlets in Singapore and it offer catering service too. 

Fourth stop, Crystal Jade Dining In.

Crystal Jade Dining In at VivoCity has a wide selection of Cantonese style delicacies and dim sum. 



 Scallop Porridge,

The porridge was pretty good as it was fragrant, and smooth. It was quite filling and a portion is quite big. 

 Roasted Pork,

The roasted pork meat was good. The skin was crispy and not that salty. The meat was tender and don't have much fat. 

 Not fried Rice,

 This dish is called "not fried rice" because it's made up of bean sprouts instead of rice! Quite an interesting dish. Taste wise, it was crunchy and was quite healthy .

Cereal Prawn,

The cereal prawn was pretty good. The cereal prawn was handled differently compared to most places even seafood restaurant. The prawn was fresh and juicy. The cereal taste was well blended into the prawn.

The prices are resonable and the service was quick. The view from the restaurant is remarkable as well. It is directly opposite Universal Studios in Sentosa.

Fifth Stop, The Asian Kitchen.

The Asian Kitchen serves up delicious Taiwanese and Szechuan inspired dishes in a casual, modern setting with great service. 



 Jak Jiang Mian,

The savory sauce was good. The sauce was the main thing in this dish, if the sauce was bad it will ruin everything in this dish. Noodle was smooth an chewy. 

 Roasted Pork and Duck,

The roasted meat was pretty good. The roasted pork meat was tender and not much fat but the skin was a bit dry and not crisp enough. The duck meat was tender and tasty. The skin was crisp and wasn't that oily. 

 Pork Chop fried rice,

The fried rice was fragrant but it was a bit oily, and the pork chop was a bit tough. 

 Salted Egg Prawn,

The salted egg sauce was just average. It was not that fantastic and the sauce was a bit little. The prawn was fresh but it was too oily even with the sauce.

Stir fried long bean with prawn,

The stir fried long bean with prawn was so so. It was a little bit salty other than that it was good.

The Asian kitchen currently had 8 outlets in Singapore. 

Sixth Stop, Xi Men Ding. 

Ximending specialises in authentic Taiwanese favourites. They serve Taiwanese home style dishes such as fried oysters with vegetables, radish and egg pancake and san bei chicken with basil.



 Braised Pork Belly Rice,

The braised pork belly was a little bit dry and it was quite bland. The rice was quite soggy too. 

 San Bei Chicken,

The signature dish over here. The sauce was a bit little but it was pretty good. The sauce was fragrant, and savory. The chicken was tender and well seasoned.

 Radish & Egg Pancake,

The egg was too salty.

 Wok-Fried Tofu with Meat Sauce,

The meat sauce was good, it was salty and sweet. Tofu was smooth and soft. 

 Braised Pork in Soya Sauce,

The Braised pork was tender and soft. It felt like melted in your mouth. Sauce was sweet and salty.

Service was very bad!! As i waved my hands up in the air for about 3-5 minutes and nobody attended to us. The service staff saw our hands and quickly looked away and attended to other matters such as wiping the tables, clearing of plates from other tables, and pouring tea for other guests. The service staffs was very impolite too.  It not wroth a visit as the service was bad and the food was just average. 

Seventh Stop, Oasis Bay Taiwan Porridge.

Oasis Bay Taiwan Porridge has been in business for more than 38 years and is now located Toa Payoh Town Park, opposite HDB Hub and next to Toa Payoh Swimming Complex. It was previously located next to the Singapore Indoor Stadium and opposite the old National Stadium.



 Sweet Potato Porridge,

The porridge was fragrant, smooth and the nature sweetness from the sweet potato. The sweet potato was cooked with the porridge till is was very soft. 

 Pig Intestine with Salted vegetable,

The salted veggie was well seasoned and the pig intestine was fresh and well braised. 

 Oyster Omelette,

Oyster was fresh and juicy, egg was well fried and seasoned. 


Stewed Pork,

Pork was tender, soft and savory. The sauce was really good as it was fragrant and not that salty but it was quite oily. 

Steamed Salted Fish with Minced Pork,

It was pretty good as the meat was fresh and tender, the salted fish enhanced the taste of the minced meat and the sauce.

The price is reasonable and the food quality was pretty good.

Eighth Stop, Chicken Hot Pot.

Chicken Hot Pot originated from Shanghai, 69 Wu Jiang Road. The following are the accolades that Chicken Hot Pot had garnered since 2002. 




 Chicken Hot Pot,

Chicken Hot pot served with special spices, onion, celery, green pepper, chilli and seasoning to bring out an aroma of the chicken hotpot. The chicken was tender and fragrant from the spices. 


Spicy Prawn Hot Pot, 

The spicy prawn hotpot served with rich tom yum base, fried prawns, french fries and celery. A unique combination. The prawn are deep fried till the shells are crispy enough to be eaten and it was fresh. The base was good, it was sour and spicy.

There is a display steamboat ingredients fridge at a corner where customers can self-take the items such as mushrooms, vegetables, eggs and more to add into the soup.All these will be additional cost based on the colour of the plate. 

Ninth Stop, Paradise Inn.

Paradise Inn is another concept by the Paradise Group. A casual dining concept that offers classic Cantonese cuisine. 


Pork Ribs,

Pork ribs was tender and sweet. The sauce was sweet and salty. The portion was quite big too. 


 Steamed Cod Fish,

The cod fish was well steamed. It was fresh, soft, smooth and savory. The sauce wasn't that salty, it was perfect. 


 Hotplate Tofu,

The hotplate tofu was served with Tofu, minced pork meat, mushroom, and spring onion to enhance the taste. Tofu was soft on the inside and crisp on the outside. The gravy was savory and think. 


Belacan Kang Kong,

The kang kong was well stir fried, the veggie was soft and crunchy but it wasn't that spicy. 


Sliced Roasted Pork, 

The pork was a little bit tough and plain. It wasn't that fantastic.

Service was efficient and the place was generally quite empty on weekday nights. Price wise, it was reasonable. It worth a visit. 

Tenth Stop, KungFu Paradise. 

KungFu Paradise is a casual Hong Kong style cafe offering an extensive menu and Asian-influenced western fare. It also another restaurant own by paradise group. 



 Iced Coffee,

Normal.


 Truffle Fries, 

It was just normal. It just tasted like normal fries, the truffle aroma wasn't strong enough and the think cut fries was quite plain. 


 Salted Egg Custard Bun,

 It wasn't that fantastic! The salted egg taste wasn't that strong and the bun was a bit tough. 


 Tom yum Ramen,

It was served with instant noodle, egg, tomato, veggie, chicken, mushroom, and tom yum base. 
Nothing special about this dish. 


Hamburger Steak baked rice with Japanese curry,

The Japanese curry was a bit bland and salty, the steak was overcooked and tough. The baked rice was a bit tasteless too.

Food was just so so and the service was quite bad, the service staff took quite long to come over and took our order and he was quite rude. And the order was wrong too. Seriously, i don't think it worth a try. 

Eleventh stop, Kim Gary.

Hong Kong Kim Gary cafe was opened in 1992, the first restaurant located at Sham Shui Po Tong Mei Road. By continuing to reform and team effort, Kim Gary cafe business had been expanded from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru and Singapore, more than 300,000 customers per month from different countries enjoyed delicious meals and comprehensive services from Kim Gary.


 Iced Coffee,

Coffee aroma was strong and smooth. 


 Peanut Butter Thick Toast,

The peanut butter thick toast was pretty good as the peanut butter was creamy, and crunchy, the condensed milk was well blended into this dish, don't worry it wasn't that sweet. 


 HK Style Spaghetti,

It was served with yam, carrot, pork meat, bean, onion. and black sauce. 
The noodle was chewy and smooth, the sauce was really good and savory. But the pork and yam was a little bit tough. 


   Mixed Grill Spaghetti,

It was served with chicken chop, pork chop, sausage, ham, sunshine egg, corn, broccoli, and spaghetti topped with black pepper sauce. 

The chicken was tender but the pork was a little bit tough. The black pepper sauce was a little bit watery and plain. Spaghetti was just average.

 The price was reasonable, food quality is acceptable. It worth a try. 

Twelfth stop, Wong Kok.

Wong Kok Char Chan Teng is just another Hong Kong style concept cafe. It served modern western cuisine as well. It opened first outlet in Singapore around 2007. 


 Peanut Butter Thick Toast,

The peanut butter thick toast was pretty good as the peanut butter was creamy and smooth. The condensed milk enhanced the peanut butter for even better taste. 


 Beef Spaghetti HK style,

It served with bean, corn, sliced beef, and spaghetti topped with their special black sauce. 

The noodles texture was chewy but the sauce was a bit sweet and sliced beef was quite tough. 



 Honey Chicken dry noodle, 

It served with honey chicken, veggie, yellow egg noodle topped with the special sauce and spring onion. 

The noodle texture was too soft, that make the noodle lose it own chewy texture. The sauce was a bit plain and too much MSG. The honey chicken was a bit too sweet.

The service was very bad over here. The service staff was inattentive, impolite and forgetful. Food quality was just so so but the milk tea was good. Think is just a good place to quench thirst.
